1911 Yellowstone National Park, WY | Canyon | 30'x30' Shaded Historic USGS Map

This very historic map of the Canyon Area in Yellowstone was to cool not to add some digital sunshine! Originally made in 1911, this is a true piece of Yellowstone history and seemingly brings one back in time. It contains the Lamar Valley, Canyon Area, Specimen Ridge, Hayden Valley and part of Yellowstone Lake. If you look closely in Lamar Valley, you will see a site marked "Buffalo Farm"; this is where the American Bison was saved from extinction by ranching efforts in Yellowstone National Park. Ranching bison is no longer necessary to sustain the herd in Yellowstone but the "Buffalo Farm" aka ranch, is still a functioning research center today.

These maps used data collected from field observations which was then complied, drawn and edited by hand. 

We used recent digital elevation data combined with modern rendering techniques to enhance this hand selected, vintage USGS map. Even though the map is 2 dimensional, the techniques applied make it appear to pop off the page.

Please Note: Reading the text on the map can sometimes be difficult, primarily because of the historic map's small font size and age. In areas where relief shading obscure text, it can become illegible. To enhance readability, we recommend ordering a larger map size, although the text may still be obscured in darker areas. 

In addition, due to the techniques used in 1911 for the making of this map, some feature locations are not entirely accurate and do not line up perfectly with the shading created using modern elevation data.
