The map showcases the part of Yellowstone National Park nearest Gardiner. This map is the "updated" version of the 1896 Gallatin quadrangle published by the USGS. While certainly not recent, added features and more accurate locations are found on this map compared to the 1896 version. The historic maps have a way of bringing us back in time, showing the Gallatin Range, Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Geyser Basin of Yellowstone. A close look shows how the 1911 map was created before any modern roads existed inside Yellowstone! This map is very old; due to the cartographic methods used back in the day, some features and topo lines don't perfectly match the modern elevation data used to add shading.

Recent digital elevation data was combined with modern rendering techniques to enhance this hand selected, vintage USGS map. Even though the map is 2 dimensional, the techniques applied make it appear to pop off the page.

Please Note: Reading the text on the map can sometimes be difficult, primarily because of the historic map's small font size and age. In areas where relief shading obscure text, it can become illegible. To enhance readability, we recommend ordering a larger map size, although the text may still be obscured in darker areas.
