2001 City of Rocks National Reserve, ID | 7.5'x7.5' Historic USGS Map

The City of Rocks in southern Idaho is a natural playground for hikers and rock climbers. This area has an extensive history of climbing on the large granite domes that seem to be scattered across the landscape.  These formations were created when large plumes of granite solidified in the earth's crust. Over times, erosion removed the ground from above and exposed the granite, allowing it to weather into wild spires and domes! The city is a special place which is why we were inspired to make this shaded relief historic map. We chose a 7.5x7.5 minute USGS map from 2001.

We used recent digital elevation data combined with modern rendering techniques to enhance this hand selected, vintage USGS map. Even though the map is 2 dimensional, the techniques applied make it appear to pop off the page.

Please Note: Reading the text on the map can sometimes be difficult, primarily because of the historic map's small font size and age. In areas where relief shading obscure text, it can become illegible. To enhance readability, we recommend ordering a larger map size, although the text may still be obscured in darker areas.
